David Lee is a restricted free agent. That means any offer he receives, the Knicks can match it and retain him. At the same time, the Knicks have been trying to create as much cap space entering next year as they can in order to lure LeBron James. Since Hedo Turkoglu decided not to go to Portland, the Trailblazers now have enough cap space to offer
